Save the Date Etiquette

  • When do I send save the dates?
Typically, save the dates are sent out 6-9 months before your wedding, unless you’re planning a destination wedding. If a destination wedding is in your future, save the dates should be sent at least 12 months prior to the wedding to give your guests plenty of time to arrange travel plans.
  • Should every guest receive a save the date?
Consider sending one save the date per household. If you decide to send one per household, be sure to include each invited guest’s name on the save the date envelope so they know exactly who is expected to “save the date”. The second and most important thing to keep in mind is that each guest who receives a save the date must also receive an invitation. So, be sure to finalize your guest list before sending out your save the dates!
  • What information should I include on my save the date?
Your save the date must have you and your fiancé’s names and wedding date. It should also indicate that a formal invitation will be sent at a later date so that guests don’t mistake your save the date as your actual wedding invitation. You may want to include the wedding location (especially if it’s not your hometown or if you’re planning a destination wedding). If you have a wedding website, you should also consider placing the URL somewhere on your save the date.
